Bethel Center

Community Profile

Kampala is Uganda's capital and largest city. With 8.5% HIV infection rate, the city was a priority for CARE for AIDS program expansion in 2019. We first began working in Kampala in December 2019, and Bethel Center is the third center to launch in the region. Bethel center operates in partnership with St. Nicholas Church of Uganda, an Anglican Church centrally located between three slum communities- Kalerwe, Katanga, and Bwaise. The three communities combined have an estimated population of 51,500. With an HIV infection rate around 8% and access to only one medical dispensary, there is a large population of potential clients who are in desperate need of services.

The first class of 80 HIV+ clients at Bethel Center launched on September 30th, 2020.

Client Profiles

Namusisi, 2021 CLIENT

Namusisi is a 45-year-old woman who lives in Kalerwe Kiggundu. She is a widow and a single mother. Her husband died of HIV and this pushed her to find out her status. When she found out that she was HIV positive, this news hit her badly and she thought life had ended. She thought she was going to follow her husband soon, but wondered who would take care of her kids since she was their sole provider.

Namusisi joined the CFA program in 2020 as a Muslim. She didn't know about Jesus Christ but through CFA, she gave her life to Christ. This was a decision she says has changed her life greatly.

Through therapy sessions, she got the courage to disclose her status to her children who now remind her to take her medication. In a CFA seminar, she was able to learn how to make liquid soap, which she now uses to wash customers’ clothes and also sells to other people around her residence.

Namusisi testified that she and her children have not suffered during the pandemic because she could earn money from washing clothes and selling liquid soap. She continues to thank CFA for the great work done in helping people stay close to God, empowering them through skills, and helping them live healthy through counseling and medical support.
