How our program works

CARE for AIDS operates centers in multiple communities throughout East Africa, and each center is located within a local church, which is local, cost effective, and discreet for our clients. Each center has two local Kenyan or Tanzanian counselors who guide 80 HIV+ clients through a nine-month process. Throughout the nine months we work to empower clients in five main areas: spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and economically. We do this through the series of activities below:

Spiritual Transformation

Center counselors share the Gospel early and often with each client in the program. Clients who are Christians or become Christians during the program are discipled in the spiritual counseling sessions each week.

Physical Transformation

The health counselor reviews proper drug adherence, hygiene, and nutrition with each client during weekly counseling sessions. Clients are also provided with a supplemental weekly food portion to help feed their families.

Emotional Transformation

Through one-on-one counseling and home visits, counselors address the issue of self-stigma throughout the program leading each client toward a healthy expression of dignity and self-worth. Clients also meet semi-weekly for peer-led group therapy sessions.

Social Transformation

Once clients enter the program, they have the opportunity to see they are not alone. By participating in group therapy and forming peer support groups, clients gain a community of peers who encourage and assist them after the program has ended.

Economic Transformation

Twice a month, clients attend a group economic empowerment seminar. Seminar topics vary from financial literacy to practical skills like soap-making and beadwork.

 Partnerships

We aggregate existing services so that our clients can access them within the local church. Having access to nutrition, medication, spiritual support, education, and employment resources helps clients break the cycle of poverty and disease.
