Suba North Center

community profile

Homa Bay Suba North is one of the newest CARE for AIDS centers located in the Rural Homa Bay region. Homa Bay is a rural community a few hours outside of Kisumu on the shore of Lake Victoria. The small economy largely relies on fishing, but the community is known throughout Kenya for its high HIV infection rate. At 12% infection, Homa Bay has the highest HIV rate of any community in Kenya. Because of a limited economy, sex work is pervasive in Homa Bay, which contributes to the high rate of HIV infection.

Many community members are suffering from extreme poverty and, because of the town’s proximity to the lake, there is a high risk of malaria and other tropical diseases.

The CARE for AIDS center in Suba North launched in the summer of 2019 as part of the pilot program for our rural model. This center operates in partnership with PAG Sienga Church. You can learn more about our rural pilot project in the video below.

Center Staff

Spiritual Counselor: Janet Obengo

Janet grew up in an urban environment with her extended family. She joined CARE for AIDS in 2019 as the Spiritual Counselor for the Rural Homa Bay Suba North center, part of the first CARE for AIDS rural pilot program. Janet is married with three children. Her favorite part of the job is when she gets to share the Word of God with clients.

“I wish three things for our clients: Hope beyond the grave, economic empowerment, and life and hope after graduation.”

Health Counselor: Calvince Aballa

Calvince grew up in Nyawita Estate in Kisumu, Kenya in a Christian family. Unfortunately Calvince’s father passed away in 1998. Taking a job at CARE for AIDS was an easy decision for Calvince, who wants to help the oppressed, discouraged, and hopeless in the community.

“I dream to see my clients empowered; physically, spirtitually, emotionally, mentally, and economically.”
