Suba South Center

Community Profile

Homa Bay Suba South is one of the newest CARE for AIDS centers located in the Rural Homa Bay region in Kenya. Homa Bay is a rural community a few hours outside of Kisumu on the shore of Lake Victoria. The small economy largely relies on fishing, but the community is known throughout Kenya for its high HIV infection rate. At 12% infection, Homa Bay has the highest HIV rate of any community in Kenya. Because of a limited economy, sex work is pervasive in Homa Bay, which contributes to the high rate of HIV infection.

Many community members are suffering from extreme poverty and, because of the town’s proximity to the lake, there is a high risk of malaria and other tropical diseases.

The CARE for AIDS center in Suba South launched in the summer of 2019 as part of our rural pilot project. This center operates in partnership with Sindo Baptist Church in the Suba South community. You can learn more about the rural pilot program in the video below.

Center staff

SPIRITUAL COUNSELOR: BOB OGOLLA

Bob joined CARE for AIDS in April of 2019 for the launch of our first rural pilot program in the rural community of Homa Bay, Kenya. Bob grew up in a village called Ratanga, unfortunately losing his parents at a young age. Bob joined CARE for AIDS because of his desire to be an agent of change - helping to lead clients through the challenges they face into a fuller life.

Health Counselor: Peninah Walwanga

Peninah grew up in a family of 7, with two brothers and two sisters. She joined CARE for AIDS in 2019 for the launch of the first rural pilot program. Joining CARE for AIDS to serve people and help change their lives for the better, Peninah is thrilled to be able to interact one on one with the clients, to get to know them and their character.

“My dream for the clients is to see them grow and become bigger in their societies.”
