Githogoro Center

Community Profile

After serving people living with AIDS, particularly widows, for many years and watching our work from afar, the relationship between the partner church and CARE for AIDS began to grow. We officially started our partnership at the Githogoro Center in 2021. The first class launched in early fall 2021. Church staff shared: “We saw in CFA 3 things: structure, accountability, empowerment. We’ve been praying for 8 years to have a program for HIV+ people. God is a God of miracles. He spoke [the partnership with CFA] into us.”

Elizabeth, 2021 GITHOGORO CLIENT

Elizabeth was born in Kiambu and raised by a single mother who struggled to financially support Elizabeth and her siblings. Elizabeth had to drop out of school and lived with her mother until she met her first husband at age 18. After 18 happy years together, he died in 2006. Doctors refused to tell Elizabeth what happened.

While she was still mourning her husband’s death and adjusting to her new life as a single mother to their four daughters, she began to experience random illnesses. She got tested for HIV and, when she received the positive results, Elizabeth encouraged herself in the Lord and His plan for her life. She immediately started taking her medications and faithfully going for clinic visits. “I chose not to let anything stop me from living a good life,” she said.

In 2016, Elizabeth met her now-husband when she relocated to Githogoro village. At the age of 43, Elizabeth and her husband welcomed their HIV-negative son and her health was manageable until mid-2021. She has since experienced various health challenges, including cervical cancer and fibroids. Elizabeth heard about CARE for AIDS, which was recruiting clients in her area. She had just left the hospital on the Githogoro center's launch day, but she came despite still feeling sick and weak. She was accepted into the program and joined the clients at the Githogoro Center when it launched in September 2021.

Elizabeth has been described as “a pocketful of sunshine and positivity.” She has shared that she knows God is still working miracles in her life regardless of the challenges that piled up. She counts her husband as one of the miracles, as he has supported her faithfully and decided to join the CFA program with his wife. She expressed gratitude for the part that CFA has played in her life and that her husband is receiving support from CFA to pay for medical tests and medication after being diagnosed with diabetes. In the future, Elizabeth hopes to benefit from the lessons and skills taught in the CFA program and eventually start a business.
