Mburahati Center

Community Profile

The CARE for AIDS center in the Mburahati community launched in March 2017. The Mburahati community is a densely populated slum on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam with a high HIV infection rate, low education rate, and a high crime rate. The CARE for AIDS center in Mburahati operates in partnership with Mburahati Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Josiah Samuel and center counselors Amos Gasper and Janeth Nassal.

Graduate Profiles

Oliver Laurent Nkwera, 2020 Client

Oliver Laurent was born HIV+. She was one of the youngest clients in the 2020 class in Mburahati, but she was eager to learn and grow throughout the program. She joined the center in March of 2019. Although she had been raised in a culturally Christian home, she had never understood the faith. She dove into the spiritual content and fell in love with the Bible. She made her first official profession of faith in the course of the program, and she attributes her new faith to her newfound health and joy in life. We look forward to Oliver’s continued growth in the coming months and we eagerly await celebrating her graduation in 2021.
