Kitengela Center

Community profile

Kitengela is a community south of Nairobi where many large scale flower manufacturers plant their flower farms. The economy relies mostly on these farms and the raising and selling of livestock. Most residents in the Kitengela area live in informal homes very little access to sanitation and consistent medical care. HIV is prevalent in this community largely due to the prominent sex industry and the transient nature of many of the residents.

CARE for AIDS began operations in Kitengela in early 2020 in partnership with Deliverance Church Kitengela under the leadership of Bishop Kamwaro.

HEALTH COUNSELOR: coming soon

SPIRITUAL COUNSELOR: Hassan Ndungu

The fourth of five children, Hassan Ndungu grew up all around Kenya - from Nairobi, to Kitane and Mombasa. He has always had a passion to help and reduce the suffering of vulnerable people within his community. Before joining CARE for AIDS as the Spiritual Counselor at Nairobi’s Kitengela center, he occupied a similar role within his church.

Hassan loves the one-on-one counseling aspect of the CARE for AIDS program. He delights in seeing the direct impact of a life being transformed, and most of all desires to see a client receive Jesus as their savior.

Graduate Profiles

Philes Kalekye, 2020 Graduate

Philes joined the CARE for AIDS program in Kitengela in 2019. At the time, she was running a small vegetable stand in the community but could barely make ends meet. Philes had joined the program to learn about how to better manager her health and HIV status, but graduated with more skills thatn she ever anticipated. She committed herself to learning as much as she could during the monthly economic empowerment seminars, and came away from the nine month experience with the skills she needed to start multiple small businesses. She now is highly skilled in making soap, detergent, fabric softener, and liquid disinfectants. Throughout the community lockdowns implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, Philes was able to continue manufacturing soaps and disinfectants, and she is now thriving economically, physically, spiritually, and socially.
