Igoma Center

community profile

Mwanza is the second largest city in Tanzania and it sits on the northwest shore of Lake Victoria. Around the lake there are many small fishing communities that are currently experiencing up to 20% infection rates for HIV. This, in combination with extreme poverty, has created a difficult environment. The CARE for AIDS center in the Igoma community in Mwanza launched in 2019 in partnership with Tanzania Assemblies of God Calvary Temple.

Mgeni Haruna, 2020 client

Mgeni joined the CARE for AIDS program in 2019. When she joined, her health was extremely fragile. She was barely able to walk because of an opportunistic infection, and was unable to work to provide for herself and her family. Thanks to the counseling and support from the center’s health counselor, Mgeni was able to access medical care that healed her leg and allowed her to walk again.

Mgeni is one of the many Muslim clients who graduated from the Igoma center in 2020- she was amazed that the Christian church cared enough for her to help her heal physically, and she is interested in learning more about the Christian faith in the coming months and year. We are excited to follow Mgeni’s journey as she lives a physical and spiritual life beyond AIDS.
