Kosovo Center

Community Profile

Kampala is Uganda's capital and largest city. With an HIV infection rate of 8.5%, the city was a priority for CARE for AIDS program expansion in 2019. We first began working in Kampala in December 2019, and the Kosovo Center is the fourth center to launch in the region.

Kosovo is an informal urban community in the Rubaga Division of Kampala. This community is home to a large population of refugees from South Sudan, DRC, and Somalia, and all community members are living in extreme economic poverty. There is an estimated population of 33,000 in Kosovo, but the community is also centrally located between three other slum areas- Lusaze, Munaku, and Kiyaye. The CARE for AIDS center in the Kosovo community will serve residents from all of these areas. This center operates in partnership with Word of Life Community Church.

The inaugural cohort at the Kosovo center launched in May of 2021 with a full class of 80 HIV+ clients (30 men and 50 women).
